ASEAN countries’ history and culture were inscribed in the hands long before they were recorded in writing. People have cut leather, threaded looms, and carved bamboo by hand, creating works through which they have passed down their lives, thoughts, and stories from one generation to the next. The traditional craft traditions of Southeast Asia's 11 countries have long demonstrated that handcrafting is not only a way of passing down a community's knowledge and culture, but also a language in its own right. The inaugural and permanent exhibition of Jeonju ASEAN Hall, "ASEAN: Where Hands Bridge Time," explores the traditional performing arts and craft traditions of 11 ASEAN countries, including masks, textiles, musical instruments, and shadow puppetry, which presents the life and craftsmanship of ASEAN's community passed down through generations by the hands of its people.
