사진의 우주를 유영하는 감각의 변주: 서울시립 사진미술관 개관 특별전

서울시립 사진미술관은 국내 최초의 공공 사진미술관으로서 한국 사진사의 계보를 정립하고 사진 매체의 미래적 가치를 탐구하는 거점입니다. 그 역사적인 시작을 알리는 개관 특별전 《광채 光彩: 시작의 순간들》은 사진이 단순한 기록을 넘어 하나의 예술로서 자리 잡기까지의 치열한 여정을 되짚어봅니다. 특히 이번 전시는 2015년부터 지난 10여 년간 미술관이 공들여 쌓아온 방대한 수집과 연구의 결실을 대중에게 처음 선보이는 자리로, 시대의 감각과 철학을 담아내는 사진의 본질적인 힘을 조명합니다.

이 상징적인 프로젝트의 디자인을 맡은 논스탠다드는 무엇보다 미술관이 오랜 시간 준비해 온 고유의 아이덴티티를 공간 전체에 밀도 있게 녹여내는 데 집중했습니다. 우리는 전시의 시각적 언어가 단순히 벽면에 머무는 것이 아니라, 작품과 공간, 그리고 관람객의 호흡이 하나로 어우러지는 전례 없는 균형을 구축하고자 했습니다.

가장 먼저 주목한 것은 전시장의 거대한 수직 스케일이었습니다. 자칫 작은 사진 작품들이 공간의 크기에 압도되거나 시각적으로 소외될 수 있다는 점을 고려하여, 우리는 사진의 구성 원리인 ‘마진(Margin)’과 ‘크롭(Crop)’의 개념을 공간 설계에 도입했습니다. 웅장한 전시장 전체를 면 단위로 세밀하게 분할하고 재구성함으로써, 작품 하나하나가 최적의 몰입감을 가질 수 있는 감각적인 스케일을 확보했습니다.

이 과정에서 적용된 무광의 흑색 면들은 공간의 불필요한 요소들을 시각적으로 삭제하는 동시에, 관람객을 알 수 없는 깊이의 공간적 확장 속으로 밀어 넣습니다. 분할된 벽체들 사이로 실제 작품들이 배치되며 만들어내는 공간의 층위는 마치 중첩된 시간의 기록처럼 풍성한 서사를 만들어냅니다. 특히 벽체 곳곳에 설계된 오프닝 너머로 겹쳐 보이는 작품의 면들은 관람객에게 낯선 공간감을 선사하며, 현재의 공간에서 다른 차원의 세계로 넘나드는 듯한 극적인 경험을 제공합니다.

논스탠다드는 사진이라는 무한한 우주 안에서 유영하는 듯한 이 감각적인 여정을 관람객에게 선사하고자 합니다.

Navigating the Universe of Photography: Inaugural Exhibition of the Seoul Museum of Photography

As South Korea’s first public museum dedicated to photography, the Seoul Museum of Photography stands as a pivotal landmark for establishing the genealogy of Korean photography and exploring its future value. The inaugural special exhibition, "Radiance: Moments of Beginning," traces the arduous journey of photography as it evolved from mere documentation into a profound form of art. Reflecting over a decade of meticulous collection and research since 2015, the exhibition serves as a grand stage to unveil how the medium captures the collective sensibilities and philosophies of different eras.

In designing this monumental project, Nonstandard focused on seamlessly embedding the museum's long-cultivated identity into the very fabric of the space. Our vision was to ensure that the visual language of the exhibition did not merely sit on the surface but achieved a sophisticated balance where artworks, architecture, and the audience’s presence resonate in harmony.

Our primary challenge was the museum’s immense vertical scale. To prevent intimate photographic works from being overwhelmed by the spatial volume, we incorporated the fundamental principles of photography—"Margin" and "Crop"—into the architectural layout. By deconstructing the grand space into refined planes and segments, we established a sensitive scale that allows each piece to command its own presence and foster deep immersion.

The black planes utilized throughout the design serve a dual purpose: they "erase" visual noise, creating a void that simultaneously suggests an unfathomable, infinite depth. As artworks are integrated into these segmented walls, they create layers of spatial narrative, reminiscent of the overlapping trajectories of time. The strategically placed openings within the wall structures offer glimpses into neighboring sections, inviting visitors to transcend their current physical boundaries and drift into different dimensions.

This immersive experience of floating through a photographic cosmos is more than just an exhibition design; it is a profound spatial manifesto that marks the brilliant beginning of the Seoul Museum of Photography.
